In February, Irish hospitals announced tenders for specialist doctors in various areas of specialization, and opportunities are open for both specialists and non-specialist doctors.

Doctors in Ireland are well paid depending on where they live, and the Irish healthcare system is the eighth best in the world. The work is exciting, varied and you will work with many patients, but it is also rewarding and enables the acquisition of various new knowledge. In order to be able to start working in an Irish healthcare facility, you must have a good knowledge of the English language. A passed IELTS certificate (English language test) is mandatory from 2023, if you want to work in the Irish health system. A score of 7.0 or above is required on each part of the exam to qualify for employment and start your career in Irish hospitals. If you have a B2 level English language certificate, you can choose employment according to your preferences.

Obtaining a license to work (general or specialist registration) is another prerequisite for working as a doctor in Ireland. The process takes an average of three to six months, and at the time of applying for the tender, it should already be completed and active. In order to obtain a license it is necessary to send your documentation to the Irish Medical Chamber (IMC), which makes a decision on whether you will be able to work in this country. The most sought after specialist doctors in Ireland during February 2023 are:
psychiatrists, especially psychiatrists specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry, anesthesiologists, gynecologists, cardiologists, pathologists, dermatologists, pulmonologists, microbiologists, otorhinolaryngologists, surgeons and geriatricians.

If you are a resident or do not have a resident, you can apply for the SHO position in all departments except surgical or Registrar level for all residents who have completed more than half of their resident training.

The levels of medical positions in Ireland can be divided into:

– PRHO, i.e. Pre-registration House Officer or Foundation doctor (they are often called intern positions – intern, intern
– SHO – Senior House Officer (higher level of internship
– Registrar and Specialist Registrar positions
– Consultant position
